Curdimurka

Curdimurka

This long abandoned railway siding between the old Ghan Railway Line and the Oodnadatta Track is in the middle of almost nowhere. For many years this siding had been home to the many fettlers who looked after the railway line between Marree and William Creek. Long before the closure of the line in 1980, the site had already fallen into disrepair.

It has been brought back from obscurity by members of the Ghan Railway Preservation Society. In an effort to raise the finance for this project a ball is organised every two years. The first ball in 1986 was attended by just a hundred people. Ten years later the ball attracted several thousand men and women from all over Australia and even some from overseas.
