Dutch born, self-taught Talc sculptor, artist, poet, bush philosopher and supporter of the new flag for Australia, Cornelius Johan Alferink, better known as Talc Alf, has carved himself a place in outback art and modern history. ***
Born in Baarn, Holland in 1945, Alf migrated at a young age to Western Australia where he was brought up on a dairy farm. In 1960 he left the comforts of home to explore Australia. As a geologist's field assistant he discovered talc and found it perfect for his hobby, sculpture. He now looked for the best talc deposit in Australia. This he found at Mount Fitton in the northern Flinders Ranges. ***

He also found the perfect partner and after marrying her in 1974 he settled at Lyndhurst in South Australia, the best place to live and work. For a while he had the mail run to the Mount Fitton Talc mine and usually returned with a load of talc. ***

Alf's designs are mostly modern, impressionist and with a realist touch, reflecting both his individual outlook on life and his keen perceptions of his environment. Alf is a great admirer of Henry Lawson, Banjo Paterson and naturally Australia's National Song, Waltzing Matilda ***
